Our Jewellery Design Process: Combining Technology and Expertise

Here at Christopher Evans Goldsmiths, we’re committed to making the jewellery design process as straightforward and enjoyable as possible.

A big part of that is down to our lovely experts, guiding you every step of the way, sourcing the perfect gemstones and metals for your budget and transforming your ideas into something truly unique. But we also embrace the latest technological advances in jewellery design to offer you a truly modern bespoke experience.

With the help of cutting-edge technologies like Computer-Aided Design (CAD), creating a unique piece of jewellery has never been more accessible or precise. So let’s take a look at how it all works!

From Idea to Sketch

Every great jewellery design starts with an idea – whether it’s a meaningful symbol, a gemstone you’ve always loved, or a vision for a truly unique piece.

So if you have an initial concept in mind, bring it to us! It could be a simple sketch, an old piece of jewellery that inspires you, or just a few thoughts about what you love. Don’t worry if you’re unsure – we will help shape your ideas into a cohesive design. Together, we’ll explore different styles, discuss which metals would work best, and carefully select any gemstones that will bring your piece to life.

During this stage, we’ll work closely with you to refine the details. This might involve sketching out different options, looking at sample settings, or handling loose gemstones to see how they catch the light. Whether you prefer classic elegance, contemporary minimalism, or intricate vintage detailing, we’ll guide you in making choices that suit both your style and budget.

Once the design starts taking shape, we move on to the next exciting step – creating a detailed digital visualisation using Computer-Aided Design (CAD).

Visualising Your Design with CAD

One of the most powerful tools we use in our jewellery design process is Computer-Aided Design, or CAD. This modern technology allows us to create highly detailed and accurate 3D models of your jewellery before it’s ever cast or set. Think of CAD as a digital sketchbook that brings your ideas to life in a way that’s both precise and visually stunning:

Chris and his team are experts in CAD, skillfully translating initial sketches into lifelike 3D drawings. This process lets you see every angle of your design, from the intricate details of the setting to the way gemstones will be positioned. CAD gives you a thorough understanding of what your finished piece will look like, allowing you to make any adjustments you like before we cast your jewellery.

Sometimes, people can really struggle to visualise their jewellery without a tangible item to try on. In these cases, we can create a model of the piece, likely in silver or sometimes even a 3D printed model, to make sure that everything’s just right. Most of the time though we find that CAD provides more than enough detail to help our customers visualise what the final piece of jewellery will look like.
